Maasai Mara University and Kenya Forestry Service signs an MOU
Together, we reaffirm our commitment to preserving Kenya’s rich biodiversity, empowering local communities, and fostering a culture of environmental stewardship for generations to come.
Preserving Kenya’s rich biodiversity
The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Peninah Aloo-Obudho led a delegation from the University to Kenya Forest services (KFS) headquarters in Nairobi for an MOU signing ceremony.
The MOU cements the University, KFS strategic partnership aimed at promoting environmental conservation and sustainable forest management.
The purpose of this MOU is to collaborate in seedling production, tree growing and public sensitization programs to enhance conservation of the larger MAU and MARA ecosystems. Its’ in line with the realization of the 15 billion tree growing target, a key government’s flagship program and the University’s 5M pillars.

Key objectives of the MOU are:
• To promote sustainable environmental conservation through awareness creation and capacity development
• To establish a Climate Smart Botanical garden within MMara-U premises and satellite institution
• To contribute to increased national tree cover
• To develop and demonstrate modern climate change adaptation technologies
• To identify forestry research gaps
• To support forestry research to address existing gaps
• To review and improve forestry curricula for both institutions

The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Peninah Aloo Obudho and the Chief Conservator of Forest Mr. Mr. Alexander Lemarkoko signed the MOU on behalf of their respective institutions.
The Vice Chancellor was joined by Acting Deputy Vice-Chancellor Research, Innovation and Outreach Prof. Francis Mburu, Director Public Relations, Marketing and Linkages (PRM&L) Dr. Edward Kateiya, Acting Chief Legal Officer Mr. Alfred Nyabochwa and Nickson Magak (PRM&L). Senior management of KFS were present.
This collaboration will see joint initiatives in green cover concept , tree planting, research, community education and afforestation programs— all geared towards safeguarding our natural ecosystems and addressing the pressing challenges of climate change.
