Atmospheric & Environmental Chemistry
Research in this area examines the atmospheric lifetimes and global warming potentials of fluorinated compounds, with publications in leading international journals — contributing directly to climate policy and environmental protection at both regional and global levels.
Plant Physiology, Ethnobotany & Crop Protection
Research focuses on plant physiology, plant pathology, and crop protection, including the antifungal properties of plant extracts and their effects on the physiological parameters of food crops. The School is also actively involved in collaborative projects on desert locust control and integrated pest management of cashew in East and West Africa, supported by international funding bodies.
Natural Products, Medicinal Chemistry & Ethnobiology
Active research programmes in analytical and environmental chemistry, natural product characterisation, and ethnobiology contribute to biodiversity science and African health solutions. The School’s work on indigenous plants and ethnomedicines for livestock pest management has attracted international recognition, with staff publications accumulating thousands of scholarly citations.
Renewable Energy & Materials Science
Research in solar photovoltaics, dye-sensitised solar cells, and thin film materials addresses Kenya’s and Africa’s energy access challenges, with outputs published in leading international physics and energy journals.
Applied Mathematics & Mathematical Modelling
Staff publish extensively in dynamical systems, delay differential equations, and mathematical biology — producing models for disease transmission, fisheries management, and ecological systems with both global applicability and local relevance.
Inorganic Chemistry, Nanotechnology & Condensed Matter Physics
Research in nanotechnology, inorganic chemistry, and condensed matter physics spans nanoparticle synthesis, ion implantation, and water purification technologies, with publications in peer-reviewed materials science journals.
Terahertz Technology, Electronics & Lasers
Internationally recognised research in photonics and terahertz wave generation has yielded publications in IET Optoelectronics and Springer journals, with presentations at leading European physics conferences.
Our goal is to produce graduates and research that are globally competitive and locally relevant — scientists equipped to address Kenya’s development priorities in health, energy, environment, and technology. We welcome prospective students, postgraduate researchers, and collaborators to engage with us.
