Student Hostel Project Reaches 32% Completion, Set to Accommodate 1,260 Students
“ This investment marks a major milestone for student welfare, campus expansion, and community development! 🎓✨”
The University is set to expand its student accommodation capacity through the construction of modern hostels and associated social infrastructure under the Affordable Housing Programme, aligned with the Government of Kenya’s Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA).
Implemented by the State Department for Housing and Urban Development, the project will provide accommodation for an additional 1,260 students upon completion. This development marks a significant step towards addressing student housing needs while strengthening the university’s capacity to support a growing student population.
Construction works are currently approximately 32% complete, with completion targeted on or before June 2027 in readiness for the September 2027 student intake. The project is being undertaken by Lavasa Construction Ltd, with Dama Services Ltd serving as the lead consultant.
Beyond expanding housing capacity, the project is expected to generate employment opportunities throughout construction benefiting skilled and unskilled workers, suppliers, and local businesses. Upon completion, the facilities will also create additional roles in accommodation management, maintenance, cleaning, security, and other support services.
The new student hostels and related social infrastructure will enhance the overall student experience by offering additional housing options within the university environment. This expanded capacity will also support the institution’s broader efforts to meet the growing demand for university education.
Furthermore, the project is expected to boost the local economy through job creation, the procurement of construction materials, and increased demand for goods and services across Narok County. It also underscores the vital role that investment in education-related infrastructure plays in driving socioeconomic development and creating opportunities for local communities. Maasai Mara University expresses its appreciation to the Government of Kenya, through the State Department for Housing and Urban Development, for its continued investment in student accommodation and supporting infrastructure. The university recognises the importance of this development in enhancing student welfare, supporting institutional growth, and improving the learning environment. As construction progresses towards its anticipated completion date, the project stands as a vital infrastructure investment for both Maasai Mara University and the wider Narok community. Ultimately, the development represents a significant step forward in expanding student housing, creating employment opportunities, and strengthening the university’s capacity to serve future generations of learners.
