COMMEMORATION OF THE INTERNATIONAL WORLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION (WHO) AFRICAN TRADITIONAL MEDICINE DAY

Yesterday, Monday 31st August 2026, Maasai Mara University, led by the Vice-Chancellor Prof. Peninah Aloo-Obudho PhD, EBS had the honour of hosting the International World Health Organization African Traditional Medicine Day at the University Conference Hall, in partnership with SAJOREC-CAS, Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) , and the Government of Narok County.

The Centre for Climate Change and Biodiversity Conservation (CCCBC) under the leadership of Prof. Dr. Wycliffe Wanzala, PhD, hosted the event.

The day, brought together scholars, researchers, policymakers, and practitioners in a rich celebration of African traditional medicine and its place in modern healthcare.

Key highlights of the day:

• Official opening led by the Vice Chancellor, Prof. P. Aloo-Obudho PhD, EBS

• Address and remarks by chief guest speakers: Prof. Yan Xue (SAJOREC), Dr. Yamane Yumi (Director, JSPS) and a representative from Narok County Government.

• A thought-provoking virtual keynote address by Prof. Chen Guilin of the School of Traditional Chinese Pharmacy, China Pharmaceutical University

• Ceremonious tree planting and a tour of the University Botanical Garden

• Vibrant exhibitions at Ole Ntimama Square showcasing traditional medicine practice

Engaging round-table discussions on “The Practice of Ethnomedicine and the Law in Kenya”

• Resolutions on the way forward for traditional medicine research and policy

• Award of certificates and gifts to participants and facilitators

Closing with a vote of thanks and prayers
