Docubox-East Africa Film Fund

March 5 - March 7

The Department of Languages, Literature and Film at Maasai Mara University, in partnership with Docubox-The East Africa Film Fund, will host a comprehensive three-day film and community engagement programme aimed at nurturing storytelling, creative expression, and practical film production skills among students and the local community.

Day One:The programme will begin with outreach film screenings at Enkare Ngiro. The screenings will feature curated East African films, followed by interactive discussions on themes such as culture, identity, heritage, and social transformation. The sessions will also introduce participants to opportunities in film and the creative arts, inspiring emerging storytellers to explore visual media as a tool for expression and advocacy.

Day Two: Activities will continue at Maasai Mara University with an intensive Masterclass facilitated by experienced filmmakers and representatives from Docubox. The Masterclass will cover key aspects of filmmaking, including storytelling techniques, script development, documentary production, cinematography, editing, and film distribution. The day will also include dedicated training sessions on film industry opportunities and professional pathways, as well as practical training on grant writing to equip participants with skills to successfully apply for film funding and support. The programme will conclude with a university-wide film screening and a moderated discussion, providing students with an opportunity to engage directly with industry professionals and gain practical insights into the film sector.

Day Three: The final day will focus on community-based filming exercises. Participants will collaborate with facilitators to document real-life stories within the surrounding community. This hands-on session will allow students to apply the skills acquired during the Masterclass, from concept development to filming and basic editing. The activity aims to strengthen university–community linkages while promoting authentic local storytelling and preserving community narratives through film.
