STRENGTHENING TIES BETWEEN THE UNIVERSITY AND THE UNIVERSITY OF TENNESSEE, KNOXVILLE

Maasai Mara University and the University of Tennessee, Knoxville through the Study Abroad Program has strengthened the spirit of collaboration. Social work students and faculty from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville visited the Maasai Mara University for a social work workshop and exchange program. Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Academic and Student Affairs Prof. Bulitia Mathews opened the workshop on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor Prof. Peninah Aloo-Obudho. Prof. Bulitia emphasized that Maasai Mara University is open for partnerships and connection and reiterated the crucial role technology is doing in transforming the world into a global village. “We practice experiential learning where we integrate the concept of internalization. Learning should be global with deep local impact, ”he explained.
 
Prof. Bulitia mentioned that the workshop is an important plat-form for strengthening ties and connecting cultures. “ This is a paraffin that will spill and spin the world,” he said. The event drew participation from students and faculty members on topical social fostering a rich exchange of ideas and perspectives. Post-graduate Students from the Department of Social Work presented their research works and proposals on a range of topics: Mau Forest and sustainable conservation efforts, the alarming rise in femicide cases and Postpartum Depression (PPD). The presentations were followed by candid discussions, questions and answers sessions.
 
The two institutions signed an MOU to cement their relationship before the guests were treated to a guided walk around the University, including a tour of the scenic botanical garden, allowing them to experience the beauty and biodiversity of the campus environment. Present were Prof. Bernard Kodak, Dean School of Arts, Humanities, Social Sciences and Creative Industries, Dr. Kennedy Onyiko, Director, Gender, Culture and Equity, Dr. Zeddy Lemein, Chairperson, Department of Social Science, Dr.Edward Kateiya, Director Public Relations, Marketing and Linkages among other staff and students. University of Tennessee, Knoxville team was led by Dr. Mary Gitau.
