SUMMARY:INTERNATIONAL W.H.O. AFRICAN TRADITIONAL MEDICINE DAY
DESCRIPTION:THE COMMEMORATION OF THE INTERNATIONAL WORLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION (WHO) AFRICAN TRADITIONAL MEDICINE DAY \nThe Commemoration of African Traditional Medicine Day will be held at Maasai Mara University on Monday\, August 31\, 2026\, under the theme “Scaling the Heights of African Ethnomedicines through Innovation\, Integration and Research.” The event recognizes the important role of traditional medicine in providing accessible\, affordable and culturally rooted healthcare across Africa. It aligns with the WHO Global Traditional Medicine Strategy 2025–2034\, emphasizing safe\, effective and evidence-based ethnomedicines\, integration with conventional healthcare\, protection of Indigenous knowledge\, and sustainable use of biodiversity. \nThe commemoration will be held under the title “Unlocking the Economic Potential of Cultural Heritage and Ethnomedicines in the 21st Century and the Challenges of Legal Frameworks\,” with the objective of promoting research\, documentation and standardization of ethnomedicines. Key areas of focus will include improving the recognition of traditional medicine practitioners\, strengthening legal and regulatory frameworks\, ensuring the safety and quality of traditional remedies\, protecting traditional knowledge\, promoting sustainable use of medicinal resources\, and addressing biopiracy. Activities will include presentations\, round-table discussions and exhibitions by ethnopractitioners\, with the overall goal of advancing African ethnomedicine through research\, innovation\, integration and responsible commercialization. \nJapanese Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) and Sino-Africa Joint Research Centre for the Chinese Academy of Sciences (SAJOREC-CAS)\, shall have independent stands to interact with staff and students of issues regarding: –  MSc. and PhD Scholarships and Research Programmes at Ole Ntimama Square\, the whole day. SUMMARY:Regional Data Science Hackathon 2026
DESCRIPTION:About the Hackathon\nThe DSHP Regional Hackathon is part of the Hack4dev programme\, which aims to strengthen data science capacity through collaborative\, practice-based learning. \nOver four days\, participants will work in multidisciplinary teams to solve a real-world machine-learning challenge using real datasets\, supported by experienced trainers and mentors. \nParticipants will gain practical experience in: \n\nData preparation\nMachine-learning model development\nModel evaluation\nTeamwork and collaboration\nPresenting technical solutions\n\nWho Can Apply?\nApplications are open to university students and young professionals who: \n\nAre currently enrolled at a university\, undergraduate or postgraduate.\nHave an interest in data science\, artificial intelligence\, machine learning or related disciplines.\nHave basic programming experience; Python is advantageous but not mandatory.\nAre enthusiastic about learning and teamwork.\nCan attend the full four-day hackathon.\nCan commute to and from the venue each day.\nUnderstand that travel and accommodation costs will not be covered.\nAre willing to complete the pre-hackathon preparation activities.\n\nProgramme\n\n\n\n\n\nDate\nActivity\n\n\n\n\n26 October 2026\nWelcome\, introductions\, challenge briefing and other formalities — half day\n\n\n27 October 2026\nTeams work on the challenge\n\n\n28 October 2026\nTeams work on the challenge\n\n\n29 October 2026\nFinal team presentations\, judging and closing\n\n\n\nAwards & Recognition\nOutstanding teams will be recognized for innovation\, technical excellence\, teamwork and problem-solving.
